In this project we choose three similar looking garments that portray the same style. For my project, I choose a Johnahan Simkhai's mid-calf length skirt with three white stripes towards the bottom and an overall black silhouette. The better skirt was found in Bloomingdale's, it is a black and white striped, mid-calf, mesh skirt with a black skirt underneath hitting right above the knee. The Budget skirt was in Forever 21, it is a full mesh mid-calf skirt with two white stripes at the bottom, with a black skirt underneath. The skirt hitting mid-thigh, with a black stripe on the bottom of the skirt. Each skirt shows similarities of each but with different varieties of fabric and a few nifty details that differentiate from one another.
This project showed visibly the changes between the higher end and the lower end of the fashion spectrum. My favorite part of this project was when everyone went up to present and show off the few changes between their apparel item of choice. I felt like I was sitting at home with my dad trying to find the differences in the picture that were displayed in coloring book all over again, but this time i was with my friends and it was designer and budget clothing. My least favorite part of the project was finding an item that trickled down. It was difficult to find the middle man and in my case it was the better skirt. Searching through countless websites to find one skirt with out buying all the cute clothes, is such a drag.
There are five major price market categories of apparel.
The designer is a distinctive styling that incorporates expensive fabric with attention to detail and the finish of the complete garment. (top quality and fit are emphasized through the cost of materials and labor) The designer has two parts couture and custom-made. Couture is a segment provides original, high-priced fashions for the tiny "class' market. Custom-made provides the individual fit to the clients measurements and one-of-a-kind exclusiveness.
Bridge is the expensive fabrics and fine details that are produced through designers. Bridge Lines are lines of well- know designers, considered "diffusion".
Better is high quality, but reasonably priced; designed by talented experts who are unnamed on the label. Better is usually found in selected specially and higher end department stores.
Moderate is medium priced merchandise with well-known brand names, widely available and mass-produced. Adaptations are usually found in moderate, which are distinguish features of high fashion.
Budget is a low-priced category of apparel, they are made overseas in low-wage countries, and they are mass produced.Ready-to-wear is garments produced in factories according to standard sizes.
